September 13-20, 2008
Join sommelier, journalist and author Anthony Giglio on a seven-day luxury voyage across the island of Sicily, Italy's hottest and most exciting wine region, for a gastronomic whirlwind that celebrates the Island of the Sun's culture, cuisine and, most importantly, world-class wines.
Our journey begins in the western part of the island near Palermo at the 11th Century Abbey of Sant'Anastasia, now a 28-room Relais hotel and home to a magnificent winery.
Next stop Erice, a magical medieval town that's home to Chef Carmelo Tilotta, recently invited to the James Beard Foundation in New York City, for a meal at his restaurant at the Hotel Elimo.
The following day, after visiting the Doric temple of Segesta, we head to Planeta winery. Then, traveling along the Salt Road, we arrive at Marsala, the cradle of Sicilian wine, to visit Donnafugata winery.
From Marsala we head to Agrigento for a walk through the Valley of the Temples.
The following day we'll be dazzled by Chef Ciccio Sultano for an unforgettable meal at his Michelin 2-star Il Duomo, in the Baroque gem of a city, Ragusa. On to Siracusa we'll stop for a comparative tasting of Nero d'Avola, the region's (and Sicily's) most exciting grape. Finally, we'll climb the slopes of Mt. Etna to taste the unforgettable wines of Benanti, home to some of the oldest pre-phylloxera vines on the island.
